The Lady Chapel

The Lady Chapel, interior of Church.

The Lady Chapel is where the daily Mass is celebrated. It is much used for private prayer, and votive candles can be lit. There is an image of Our Lady of Walsingham, and on the south side of the Lady Altar is a fine painting by Claire van Nerom of 'Our Lady of the Dunes', copied from the Abbey seal, which was preserved. The Madonna wears a red and not a blue robe, as was the custom in Flanders at the time. A blue light burns before this altar, to symbolise Mary's perpetual intercession for us in Heaven. For many years the chapel was used as a school, but in 1930 it was restored and refurnished for its proper purpose.
