Youghal is a wonderful place. Not only is it very peaceful and picturesque, but it is located in a very beautiful place on the coast between Knockadoon Head and Ram Head on Youghal Bay, in Co. Cork, just down the N25 road, about 25 miles from Cork City. I have been there many times, and never cease to learn something new of the place or notice the building and development of new residences and resort areas. This is the village that Sir Walter Raleigh was sent to in 1579, to assist in assuaging a rebellious lord. He was rewarded with a tract of land of 45,000 acres given to him by Queen Elizabeth. Known as Myrtle Grove, his residence was where, according to legend, he planted the first potato. Also he was supposed to have smoked the first tobacco ever brought to Ireland.
Youghal has become a very popular summer vacation trip for the Irish. Caravans, much like mobile homes, spot the green hillsides overlooking the sea, and vacationers who have purchased or rented them enjoy the wonderful Irish summers there. Resorts are beginning to spring up throughout the town. One can fish on the Blackwater River, deep sea fish, play golf, swim at the beach or go to to nearby Cork City to shop or to Waterford to visit the Waterford Crystal Factory. Or if there in late June and early July, you can participate in the annual 10 day Walter Raleigh Potato Festival. There is no lack of activities for the traveller. A walking tour of Youghal is one of the best ways to explore the attractions of this historic walled port. Visit the Heritage Center which will introduce you to the story of Youghal and then follow the trail which will take you to see important landmarks in that story. The tour takes about one hour and starts at the Heritage Center in the old market house. This then is Youghal. I hope you enjoy this photo diary of our visits to Youghal.
