Greenwich

Where the Millenium Began!

Greenwich is east of Central London, and I think one of the most interesting ways to get there is to go by boat. Go down to Westminster Pier, buy a round trip ticket on the Greenwich boat and sit back and enjoy a very fun and interesting trip down the Thames to Greenwich! You will see many bridges and buildings, including the "under construction" very large ferris wheel that will be completed to usher in the millenium in London. It is being constructed on the river bank. You also will see new buildings, both residential and business oriented. All in all, the river trip is very interesting!

Greenwich was the first to usher in the new Millenium. The history of Greenwich time goes back to 1676 when John Flamsteed, the father ofEnglish clockmaking, installed his two regulator clocks. The time was first publicly announced by the Flamsteed House time-ball, installed in 1833, so that ships at the London docks could set their chronometers by it.Greenwich is a wonderful day trip while in London. Plan to spend the day, as there is much to see and do. A nice uncrowded lunch spot, is the small cafe in the back of the National Maritime Museum.
